How a garbage disposal works

What happens to the waste after you throw it in the garbage? Many people think that the waste goes away once you have thrown it away, but this isn’t always what happens. Waste material can actually sit around in landfills and cause a lot of environmental damage, so having a way to dispose of it properly is important. This is where your garbage disposal comes in. What happens with your waste is that it is sent through pipes and down into a garbage disposal unit.

Whether you are just beginning the process or just want some pointers, this step-by-step guide will show you how to properly install a garbage disposal in less than an hour's time.

Preparation:

1. Turn your disposal off and unplug it. You can also turn off the water supply to the sink, but if you do so, remember to turn it back on before you begin working on your new disposal.

2. Take a damp rag and wipe off the sink where the new disposal will be installed. This will prevent any food or debris from falling into the pipes while you are installing your new unit, causing a clog or backup of sewage in your basement or crawlspace.

3. Take a damp rag and wipe down the outside of the cabinet where you will be installing your new unit. This will help prevent any debris from falling into the pipes while you are working on installing your new unit.

4. Remove the screws that hold the garbage disposal to its mounting bracket and slowly pull it out of its bracket. Be careful not to tear or rip any wires or cords that are attached to it.

5. Take a pair of pliers and detach the electrical cord at the bottom of your garbage disposal unit.

6. Locate the mounting bracket that your garbage disposal fits into and detach the power cord from the outlet in the ceiling.

Installation:

1. Take your new garbage disposal unit and gently slip it into its mounting bracket that was previously removed from the bottom of your unit.

2. Once it is secure, attach a new power cord to the outlet in the ceiling, then plug in your disposal and turn it on.

3. Once you turn on your garbage disposal unit, check that everything is working properly before you try to flush anything down the drain.

4. Take a bucket of water and remove any food or grease from the bottom of your sink. It's always good to clean this out so that all of the old residue is removed and any possible contaminants are flushed away.

5. Attach your new power cord to the outlet in the ceiling.

6. Take your new garbage disposal unit and slowly install it into its mounting bracket. Once it is secure, attach your electrical cords to the power outlets and test that everything is working properly.

1. Turn off and unplug your garbage disposal unit from its power source, then rinse out any remnants of food or grease in the sink with a hose or sponge.

2. Take your new garbage disposal unit out of its mounting bracket and attach your mounting bracket to its original location on the bottom of your unit.

3. Turn on your garbage disposal and check that it is working properly before you try to flush anything into the pipes.

4. Locate your metal drain lines and check that they aren't cracked or broken. If they are cracked, loose, or broken, you will need to replace them before you try to install a garbage disposal.

5. Locate your main water line and check that it's attached tightly to the wall of your home. If it is loose or broken, you will also need to replace it before you try to install a garbage disposal.

6. Attach your mounting bracket to the bottom of your garbage disposal unit, then test that you can turn it on.

7. Turn on your garbage disposal and check that the water is flowing freely down the drain. If not, you will need to tighten up the mounting bracket or get a plumber to repair any leaks or clogs in your main pipe.

8. Turn off your garbage disposal and clean the bottom of your sink again to remove any food or debris.

15. Plug in your garbage disposal and turn it on again, then slowly flush some water down the drain to test for leaks. If there are none, you're finished!
